Your body composition scan is covered

You’ve been given this by one of our fitness and local partners. A clinical-grade DEXA scan measures what your body is actually made of — fat, muscle and the visceral fat around your organs — and a GP sits down with you to explain what it means.

There’s no charge for the scan, and no charge for your GP review. Not a trial, not a taster, and nothing to sign up to.

Available until 31 October 2026.

Why Measure?

The scales tell you what you weigh. They can’t tell you what you’re made of, and that’s the part that predicts your health.

Two people the same height and weight can have completely different amounts of visceral fat — the metabolically active fat packed around the internal organs that drives insulin resistance, fatty liver and cardiovascular risk. You can’t see it, feel it, or find it with a tape measure. It’s also one of the first things to shift when you change how you train and eat, which makes it worth knowing early.

The same applies to muscle. Muscle isn’t only about strength — it’s where your body disposes of glucose, and it’s among the better predictors of how well you’ll function in your sixties and seventies. Losing it happens quietly, and usually without the scales moving.

What the scan measures

Body fat percentage.

Measured directly, not estimated from an electrical impedance guess.

Visceral fat.

The fat around your organs — the deposit that carries the most metabolic risk.

Muscle mass and skeletal muscle index.

Your arm and leg muscle adjusted for your height, so the target actually fits your frame.

Fat distribution.

Where you carry it — around the middle versus the hips and thighs — which matters independently of how much there is.

What's included

Your scan and your GP review, both covered. You’ll have the scan, then sit down with Dr Chanisheff or Dr Vo, who goes through each number, explains what it means for you specifically, and gives you a written summary to take home.

When you book, choose “Body Composition Scan + GP Review”. You’ll see other options on the list — the one with the GP review is the one your offer covers, and the review is the part that makes the numbers worth having.

You may also see bone density options on that list. Those are a different test, for assessing osteoporosis — see the FAQ below.

What happens on the day?

Before you come:

A few small things make your results more accurate — and they matter most if you plan to rescan later and compare.
Try to avoid a large meal in the 2–4 hours before your appointment. Water is fine, and being well hydrated helps. Avoid a hard training session immediately beforehand. Wear comfortable clothing without metal — no zips, underwire or belts if you can avoid them — and leave jewellery at home or be ready to remove it.
What matters most is consistency. When you come back for a repeat scan we’ll aim to replicate the same conditions — a similar time of day, and a similar gap since your last meal — because that’s what makes two scans genuinely comparable.

The scan

You lie still on an open table, fully clothed. It takes up to 30 minutes and is usually quicker. Nothing is injected, and there's no tunnel to go into — the scanner arm simply passes above you.

Afterwards

You'll see the GP straight after your scan, at the same visit.

What it costs

  • Scan: $99 covered
  • GP review: $120–$140 covered — bulk billed if you hold a Medicare card, or the standard Medicare rate of $45.05 if you don’t.

How to claim it. Book online and choose “Body Composition Scan + GP Review”, then mention which club or business gave you the flyer — either when you book, or when you arrive. That’s the whole process. There’s nothing to print, register or sign up for.

The terms, in full. One scan per person. Available to members, guests and customers of Nuvo Health’s fitness and local partners. Available until 31 October 2026. Appointments are subject to availability, and the offer can’t be exchanged for cash or combined with another offer. As with any medical service, we’ll only proceed if the scan is appropriate for you — please read the eligibility section below.

No membership, no subscription, no lock-in. You can have the scan once and never come back, and that’s a perfectly reasonable thing to do

Who this scan isn’t suitable for

Please don’t book if you are pregnant, or think you might be. A DEXA scan uses a very small amount of ionising radiation — broadly comparable to a day of ordinary background radiation, and far less than a chest X-ray — but we don’t scan in pregnancy. We’ll ask you to confirm this when you book and again on the day.

Please also let us know when booking if you’ve had a barium study, CT contrast or a nuclear medicine scan in the past week, as these interfere with the measurement and we’ll simply rebook you.

The scanning table has a weight limit of 150 kg. If that’s a concern, give us a call before booking and we’ll talk it through.

If you have any doubt about whether this scan is right for you, ring the clinic and ask. We’d rather tell you not to book.

Honest limits

We think you should know what this scan can and can’t do before you book it.

The trend matters more than any single number. One scan tells you where you are today; two or three tell you whether you’re getting better. Results are also specific to this machine and its reference population — they aren’t directly comparable to a scan on a different device or to a gym body-composition machine.

Visceral fat is a useful trend marker rather than a precise diagnostic figure, and it’s least reliable in very lean people, which is why we read it alongside your other measurements rather than chasing one number.

A body composition scan doesn’t diagnose osteoporosis — that needs a dedicated bone density scan of the spine and hip. And low muscle mass on a scan isn’t by itself a diagnosis of sarcopenia, which also requires grip strength and walking speed testing.

FAQ

Do I need a referral?

Not for a body composition scan — it’s a private service and you can book it directly. (A bone density scan for osteoporosis is a different test, and does need a referral.)

Is there anything to pay?

A body composition scan is a private service — Medicare doesn’t rebate it, and our normal fee is $99. Through your partner offer, that fee is covered.

Your doctor review is bulk billed if you hold a Medicare card. Without one, it’s the standard Medicare rate of $45.05, which overseas student and visitor health insurers will usually rebate for you.

Is it safe?

The radiation dose is very small — broadly comparable to a day of ordinary background radiation. We don’t scan anyone who is or may be pregnant.

Can I book the scan without seeing a GP?

Yes, but not as part of this offer. You’re very welcome to book the scan on its own — that’s our standard $99 fee. If you’d like to use your partner offer, book Body Composition Scan + GP Review instead, where both the scan and the review are covered.

How long until I get results?

You’ll go through them with the doctor at the same visit, and leave with a written summary to take home.

Can I bring a scan from somewhere else?

Bring it along, but different machines aren’t directly comparable, so we’ll usually be starting your trend from today.

This offer has been made available through Nuvo Health’s partnership program. The referring partner receives no payment or benefit for referrals, and no patient information is shared with them at any time.

Nuvo Health provides general information on this page. It isn’t a substitute for individual medical advice. Whether any test is appropriate for you depends on your circumstances, and we’ll discuss that with you.
