Dr Akayla Mahendran

Dr Akalya Mahendran is passionate about holistic patient focused gastroenterology care. Akalya was admitted to Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2022. She completed her Gastroenterology and Hepatology training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospitals, with her general physician training at Concord Hospital in Sydney. Akalya has endoscopic training in diagnostic and therapeutic gastroscopy and colonoscopy with exposure to transplant hepatology.   Akalya has clinical and research subspecialty interest in inflammatory bowel disease. Her other interests include liver conditions, luminal disorders and functional gastrointestinal disorders. She has a public hospital appointment at Bankstown Hospital, where she is dedicated to reducing barriers in health literacy. To further her commitment to equitable and effective high quality care, from 2023, Akalya is also a Councillor with the Australian Medical Associated NSW.   When she’s not championing her patients, she’s spending time with her young family, listening to history podcasts and exploring what’s new on Broadsheet Sydney!
