Contraceptive Implants

At Nuvo Health, we offer Implanon insertion and removal procedures performed by our healthcare providers.

Implanon is a type of contraceptive implant that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm. It provides long-term contraception by releasing a steady dose of progestin hormone, which prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg.

Patients will usually require an initial consultation with the doctor to determine suitability and assess any potential risks – The procedure can sometimes be done on the same day where appropriate.

Implanon insertion procedure

Preparation

The healthcare provider will discuss the benefits and risks of Implanon and review the patient's medical history.

Placement & Insertion

The area of the upper arm is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. The implant is then inserted just under the skin using a special applicator.

Bandage

A small adhesive bandage may be placed over the insertion site.

Implanon removal procedure

Preparation

The healthcare provider will review the patient's medical history and discuss the reasons for removal.

Localization & Incision

The implant is located beneath the skin. A small incision is then made over the insertion site.

Extraction & Closure

The implant is gently removed using forceps or a special removal tool. The incision site may then be closed with adhesive strips or sutures.

Post-removal instructions

The patient receives instructions on aftercare and what to expect during healing.
